Marana International Speedway?

For the past week, our regional airport has been home to taping for the Fox Sports 1 show “What’Cha Got?“, a competition pitting present and past Major League Soccer players against each other racing a Lamborghini around a track on one of the runways. The program will begin airing in July during the network’s telecasts of MLS action.

Members of eight teams took part in the races, zipping around the track in a banana yellow sports car. The winner from the 14 competitors gets to take the 600-horsepower Lamborghini home for the next year.

Clearly, the players and legends were having a great time taking tight turns on the serpentine track.

“It’s unbelievable; this car has so much power,” said Lee Nguyen a midfielder from the New England Revolution. “It handles great.”

Nine MLS teams are in Tucson for their annual spring training camp and exhibition matches. Players from the Revolution were particularly happy to get out of the never-ending snow event in Boston this winter.

Last year’s taping took place a little later in the year in the parking lots of two teams’ stadiums, in Carson, Calif., and Chicago.

Of course, this isn’t the airport’s first time in the spotlight. It’s also been the site for car commercials, the first plane to be named Air Force One and countless celebrity and large corporate jets.

But, at least for a week, some of the biggest horsepower was coming from a remote corner of the airport with American soccer’s best trying their feet at a new game.
