Pro golf walks away

It was a great run, but the Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana is no more.

An official announcement came this week that a Champions Tour event, for pro golfers age 50 and older, is coming to Omni Tucson National next March. That word, combined with the fact that the match play event has neither a title sponsor nor spot on the PGA TOUR schedule next year, means Marana is likely out of the pro golf business in 2015.

If so, it would signal the end of a successful eight-year run that included a Tiger Woods victory, the unveiling of a Jack Nicklaus-designed course, two new No. 1 players in the world being crowned here, two snow days and hundreds of thousands of spectators coming through the gates at both The Gallery Golf Club and The Golf Club at Dove Mountain.

The Town has been a proud host and supporter of the Accenture Match Play Championship and wishes the Tucson Conquistadores the best of luck in hosting a Champions Tour event and continuing their excellent support of local youth charities.
