Car thieves’ worst nightmare

VIN etching

The Town’s police department has a fast and free way to keep thieves from taking your car.

The department is hosting a vehicle ID etching event on March 22 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Safeway parking lot on the corner of Silverbell and Twin Peaks Road. The service is free to anyone who registers in the Watch Your Car Program. Dealers usually charge between $200 and $400 for VIN etching.

Rain postponed the scheduled March 1 VIN etching event.

VIN etching doesn’t damage a vehicle. Police personnel use a stencil and etching paste to engrave a vehicle’s ID number on the windows and windshield. If a car’s windows and windshield carry VINs, thieves would need to discard the glass before trying to sell the vehicle for parts since reputable dealers won’t purchase parts that have ID numbers.

The registered owner must have proof of insurance in order to receive the service. For more information, click here or call 1-888-NO-THIEF.
