Winning plan

A message from Town Manager Gilbert Davidson:

Marana is a community that constantly plans for success. That positive attitude that carried us through the recession and placed our Town in prime position to experience growth.

The person responsible for guiding us through the development process is our new Planning Director, Ryan Mahoney. After a search of several weeks, we hired Mahoney in late August and his first day is Oct. 14. He comes to Marana from Dolores, Colo., where he served as town manager.

One of Mahoney’s more pressing duties will be the planning and development of our downtown. Any successful community has a central gathering place, an area where people can meet, shop and live. Marana has been missing that sense of place since the 1960s, when construction of Interstate 10 went right through what used to be our downtown.

As the economy slowly improved over the past few years, the Town began to hear from people who want to invest in our community. Some are part of groups that want to plant their flag in our new downtown and are dusting off their plans to get ready for action. That’s great news for the local economy and job market.

Mahoney is the right leader to guide us through the process. In his present job, he managed a downtown revitalization project in his Southwest Colorado community. He knows the importance of a quality downtown filled with activities that draw people from across the region. We want Marana to be known as a place where residents and visitors can meet for quality time with family and friends.

Mahoney is also a Tucson native with two degrees from the University of Arizona, so coming to Marana will be a sort of homecoming. He said during the interview process that one of the things that interested him most about getting into the planning field was the Sonoran Desert. Capitalizing on the many benefits of being located in the desert is a key element of our Town’s Strategic Plan.

Our planners are experts in their field who have worked here during both prosperous and tough times. Their workload is picking up again with several exciting projects on the near horizon. These are exciting times to work for the Town.

As planning director, Mahoney will rely heavily on the skills of his employees to make our community’s dreams a reality. Our management team has the utmost confidence in his skills and we’re looking forward to working with him when he arrives in October.
