Live, via telephone, it’s Hunter Mahan!
As is typical during Accenture Match Play Media Day, the defending champion was supposed to be on hand Monday to hype the event. But last year’s champ, Hunter Mahan, had a little unfinished business to complete in La Jolla, Calif.
Weather delays during the Farmers Insurance Open pushed the event’s completion back a day. Mahan only had to finish four holes, but he couldn’t do that long-distance. So PGA TOUR officials patched him through for an audio conference.
Whether live or on the phone, Mahan sounds like he’s ready to take on all comers Feb. 20-24 at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain.
“I gained some confidence (last year,” said Mahan, who also won the Shell Houston Open. “I played the best in the world and won.”
Mahan knocked off now-World No. 1 Rory McIlroy in the championship match last year in Marana. He tore through the competition, putting up 35 birdies in 96 holes. His biggest struggle came in his first match against Zach Johnson.
“You never know when your game is going to click,” Mahan said.
His two victories last season propelled Mahan into the top 30 money winners on the all-time PGA TOUR list.
Plus, the winner gets to take home a really cool trophy. That will have to be done in-person, though.
