There are countless advantages in having the Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana. It’s a tremendous source of civic pride. It’s an honor to have the world’s 64 best pro golfers here for exciting competition. Marana gets to climb on to the world stage for a week of exposure that would cost millions to purchase.
But one important result that is sometimes overlooked is the stunning amount of charitable dollars raised by the event every year. The PGA Tour announced Monday that the tournament this past February was responsible for almost $1.3 million in support of regional children’s charities. A total of more than $8.8 million has been raised in the six years the event has taken place in Marana.
Proceeds from the event benefit Tucson Conquistadores’ charities, including the First Tee of Tucson, area Boys and Girls clubs, local YMCAs and the Pima County Special Olympics. The Conquistadores this year celebrated their 50th year of supporting youth charities in the region and the Town of Marana is proud to have them as a community partner.
The Accenture Match Play Championship is part of the World Golf Championships series, which brings together the best players from several international PGA Tours. Next year’s tournament is Feb. 18-24 at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain. We hope to see you there for a week of exciting professional golf.
